Brief

My goal is to explore the potential of reptile skins through preservation and biomimicry, using their distinctive textures, patterns, and structures to inspire innovative footwear designs. The project investigates how these natural characteristics can inform both the aesthetic language and functional qualities of contemporary footwear.

Upper

Covers and protects the foot while providing comfort, breathability, and visual character. Biomimetic approaches can draw from reptile scales to create flexible surfaces with distinctive textures.

Inner Sole

Provides cushioning and adapts to the shape of the foot for added comfort. Moisture-wicking materials can also improve hygiene and everyday wearability.

Midsole

Absorbs impact and provides additional cushioning, commonly using materials such as EVA or PU. Bio-inspired structures can further improve flexibility and energy return.

Sole

Provides traction, durability, and stability. Textures inspired by reptile surfaces can enhance grip while contributing to the overall visual language of the shoe.

Airbags

Help absorb shock and distribute pressure across the foot. Their placement can be designed to provide targeted ergonomic support and improve overall balance.

Material Exploration

In my biomimicry project, I explored materials inspired by reptile skin’s textures and patterns.

I experimented with flexible materials like silicone and rubber to capture the durability and adaptability of reptile skin in functional designs, focusing on creating tactile, scale-like surfaces.
